Recommendation for VPN

I have to implement a VPN connection between my home network and my office.

The idea is that both at the office and my home I have a dedicated router/firewall. All hosts at home should be able to talk to all hosts at my office. From my office a number of hosts should be able to talk to hosts at my home.

I think this is a pretty common set-up. I found two major document streams on Google: one is the VPN-HOWTO from tldp.org, the second is the OpenVPN.

Now the documentation on tldp.org seems a bit outdated (2002) as it talks about kernel 2.2 as the newer kernel.

What direction should I head? I *am* able to read documents, and I can setup IPTables and routing etc. But I cannot determine which is the best setup for my VPN. Usually I find that out after implementing my project.

Advice from experienced users is highly appreciated.

4 years ago I had to implement a vpn for a wireless lan on the campus of my university, and took freeswan. The reason was, that I wanted ipsec and that freeswan was able to deal with pretty much every ipsec implementation. Freeswan is now discontinued, there are 2 forks, openswan and strongswan, I haven't used either of them. I also have no experience with the ones you mentioned.

I think it all depends on your needs, what's important for you. Maximum security ? Easy implementation ? Good compatibility ? What host do you want to use the vpn with ? And so on ...

I'll check that out, thanks.
