RealPlayer8 and my browsers are NOT a match...

Hello all,

My problem : In Mozilla (1.2.1) I have RealPlayer8 working to some degree : It plays the video's ok , but when I want to use it for playing MP3-files on websites , all I get is a blank screen .
As an example:robhalford.com
On this site , I can play the video's ok , the intro plays fine , but every other soundbit is just a "no-go".
Been juggling with the mime-types a bit , but to no avail....

So far , my Google-fu has been weak....

Anyone able to give me some pointers?

i don't think the realplayer for linux plays mp3s - it basically just supports real's own codecs. Try playing the mp3s with another player.

Well , I tried that too , but the links to the mp3s won't even let me choose which program to use.
They simply take me to a blank page where it says stuff like "buffering ... 99%" in the bottom-bar.
How do I make Mozilla use another app for resolving those files?
I do recall , having it up and running once , when I was still using SuSE pro 7.3 , but I'm baffled as to how I managed that now....
I also tested Plugger(4.0) and on the testing-page everything went ok(save for the c64-soundfiles and the word-docs , but that latter one is due to the fact I uninstalled abiword and has nothing to do with my current problem)

when you go to edit->preferences, there is a tab somewhere about helper applications. If there is an entry for mp3's remove it. You might also try uninstalling plugger and other plugins first - I never had satisfactory results with that thing.

i'd strongly suggest installing mplayer and mplayerplug-in to play media online, if configured right, mplayer can evern play most quicktime and realmedia

Megamieuwsel 09-01-2003 07:30 AM

Quatch ;
Removing plugger did just the trick!:D
Once I did that , mozilla asked me again which program to use for the file.

I'll look into mplayer as well.
Installed mplayer , now see if I can find mplayerplug-in.

Megamieuwsel 09-01-2003 09:34 AM

Hmmm.....
The mplayerplug-in-deal didn't pan out properly ; when I had that one installed , not a single sound/video-link worked anymore. Even the ones I got working before...

RealPlayer still poses me a little annoyance , though;
When I click a link to a specific mp3 , a dialog-box pops up , asking whith what program to open it.
Somehow , I haven't been able to find out how to set that to /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/realplay by default.
I have to type that everytime again. (or browse to it) :(

quatsch 09-01-2003 09:40 AM

?? realplayer can't play mp3's , can it?
there should be a little box in the dialog box where you can choose whether it's going to ask you every time which program to use.

Megamieuwsel 09-01-2003 12:33 PM

Yes ; It can play mp3s
and ; Yes : I do get that box.
But....
NO : I can't get mozilla to use what I type there set as a default , so for every friggin' mp3 I want to hear , I have to re-type the entire path again.
(Ok ; "Copy&Paste" works too , but still....)
