realplayer spawning multiple players

It never used to be like this but now in Firefox whenever I click on a media link on a BBC site (and probably others) Realpalyer opens between 3 & 7 subwindows all playing the file.

Damn annoying.

Anyone know why?

I don't use Firefox but it could be something to do with your mime type identifiers in your Firefox preferences, see if you have multiple instances of Real Player, simple guess based on information provided.

Also run firefox from a terminal and see if some kind of output is provided when this occurs.

sadly no output at all from a command line firefox...it starts and runs normally but reports nothing.

A check through the fiel types reveals two instances of .ra associations but the 'remove' option is blanked (which is weird)

So far as I can tell firefox is calling mozplugger and that is in turn calling realplay. I'll dig a little more.

Does firefox output to any kind of log? Does realplayer?

life would be much easier if everything auto generated a log in /var

SFAIK there is no relaplayer or firefox log on this box.

News though, other non-BBC realplayer sites do not spawn multiple realplayer windows. It must be to do with the way that the BBC viewer child window calls realplayer which is probably very complex.

I'll keep chipping away at it and post any solution here.

Never did find a cause for this.

However, as Firefox keeps hard crashing at important moments I have returned to my roots and gone over to Opera.

Far more civilised and, surprise, surprise, BBC realplayer streams now work perfectly.

Anyone suggesting that Linux FF receives less loving attention than its MS cousin will be shot by the Gecko Thought Police :-)

mplayer and mplayerplug-in work well with firefox. No need to use realplayer.
