RealPlayer / mplayer
Ok here it goes..... Im still new to linux...I have installed RH9.0 on my laptop , I have gotten my home network, up and running . Able to share resources, among my other pcs, one running, 98SE, one running , XP Pro, and the other running dual boot, Mandrake 9.1 and XP Pro. The problem , I'm having is getting any type of media player working on my laptop. I have tried getting , mplayer working with no luck. And I have tried getting realplayer working with no luck.
I have dl the rpms for both, all of the other times I have been able to double clik on the rmp and it goes through the install process, and then I have been able to go to the run command and type it in and get it going .. But with realplayer, and mplayer .....it gives me the error of : Failed to execute command: 'realplayer' Details: No such file or directory. Don't know where to look, for directory,or what to do next.. If anyone could help me, please let me know. All, help will be greatly appreciated. I have dl, and installed yahoo chat with rmp and was able to get it going. I also have looked to see, if any media player came with RH9.0 distro. And for some reason , it seems like all the other items have came with it, like xmms, grip, and other items .. But no, media player. With my mandrake box, there is xine, I think thats what it is called. Could be wrong. Newbie in need of help. Thanks....:newbie: |
try to install mplayer using the instructions on my guide, not one person who has followed them has had any problems.

the command for realplayer is realplay NOT realplayer
Also you should search for another thread by me regarding issue with RH 9.0 and RealPlayer... Hope that helps... |
go to freshrpm.net get apt-get install it and type
apt-get install mplayer vaila your done. |
Thanks, everyone for your help...I have gotten realplayer working.....thanks. I was just typing in the wrong command , at the run program prompt......thanks..for everything..... All the information was a great help. Working on getting mplayer working....... Thanks, again.

if realplayer is working ok, you'd do well to install mplayer from source, this *should* then detect the existence of realplayer and automatically link it's libraries into mplayer, meaning mplayer can then play real media files. handy

Ok, I have a question.??? Im new to Linux....What do you mean by source. Sorry , if it sounds like a stupid question. But , I was told once, the only stupid question is one not asked. Especially , if you don't know. Thanks, for any help.

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/design6/dload.html
go to that page. under "Description" you see the first option is: MPlayer v0.90 source If you clicked the link to download this then you would be downloading - http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/rel...r-0.90.tar.bz2 - You would have "unzip" this file the compile it. The option directly below that one is "MPlayer RedHat 7.x RPM packages" - following the links for this one would allow you to download a file named similar to: mplayer.rpm |
Ok , here it is ....i have dl all the rpms for mplayer that I could find......everytime I go to install it , it tells me that I can't go any further because I'm lacking dependentcies....well, I go to install the dependentcies....and I cant do that either, because another dependentcy is needed......How can I fix this? Am I doing something wrong? Was just wondering......This is really getting to me. Am I doing something wrong? Don't know. Have been looking for other threads , for some information on this , subject ....will continue to look........

aaah depency hell striking again :)
not to worry, get yourself apt, a wonderfull program initially written by the debian people then ported to support rpm by caldera I think. Enough history; apt will take care of depencies for you. Apt automaticly downloads, installs & configures software for you. Goto freshmeat.net and search for apt4rpm. Search here for threads about apt and how to install & configure it, if needed. There's also a nice frontend for it called synaptic, you might want to get that too. |
Thanks , iceman.....I will work on getting those things done...and I will get back with you , on my progress....Thanks , alot...I appreciate your help very much..........

no problemo but please note nakkaya already mentioned apt in this thread ;)

Im sorry, nakkaya. For not giving credit , due. You did mention it , earlier in this thread. And thanks, iceman for bringing it to my attention........
