real beginer - need help bad
I have 2 major problems
1- we had a power failure and now Suse (8) is booting in the command line instead of the GUI for problem 2 of course I need to solve 1 :-( 2- each time I access anything in the GUI my monitor has lines across and flickers, Linux detected the right VGA card and monitor am pulling my hair out would be very gratefull to any kind person helping me thank you sofi |
1) Go into Yast - System - runlevel editor; make sure that runlevel 5 is selected as the default. If it is, then go into the edit screen (runlevel properties) and check to see what services are starting at runlevel 5. Make sure that xdm is checked "yes" for runlevel 5. If not, select it and choose the reset service option, then reboot.
2) For your GUI problems, run SaX2 (either from your GUI desktop or from the command line) and edit your display settings. Make sure your screen resolution and frequency are set correctly; having the wrong frequency set can cause the kind of behavior you mentioned. |
Login as root. init 3, sax2, & startx. If it doesn't work go totaly to text mode alt f2 I think & try again.

you can also type startx at a prompt to start the server. your monitor is not configured correctly, that's why it's flickering. you must find out the correct refresh rates and such with SaX.
