My KDE Kicker sometimes crashes when I am trying to download files via its KPF (KDE Public File Server, a kicker applet). I can log into the computer remotely via SSH, but when I try to restart the Kicker, the console complains about not knowing which display to start Kicker on, and then quits (as I don't have X forwarded over my SSH connection, there is no display involved there)
The home computer is running KDE 3.5.6 and my user (me) is always logged in, even when not physically present. When I SSH into the box it is as the same user. How do I restart this application as me but on the home account/login, display 0:0 ??
You might try the Qt --display option. From "kicker --help-qt"
Code:
Qt options:
--display <displayname> Use the X-server display 'displayname'
Since this is your account, and you have ssh setup, you might want to use scp or sftp to transfer the files. Then you wouldn't need to be logged in with KDE running on the remote server. Also, if you use "ssh -X hostname command", the program will display locally, even one that starts out in the system tray. It will appear in your local system tray.
Then you wouldn't need to be logged in with KDE running on the remote server.
True, but its more of my home desktop machine than a server; I just want quick ways to access some files via a web browser for my girlfriend and for myself. I keep it logged in for general use about the house.
I tested this out. I logged into vt/2 and started a program in kde using a "--display :0.0" argument.
Using scp or sftp requires no setup if you already have ssh configured. Keep them in mind if you want to access areas remotely that you don't have KPF configured to share.
