re applying lilo?

my main hdd died and took the MBR with it.

my linux drive is still okay, and i'd like to put a new mbr on it, so i can use it. I'm currently running off a knoppix cd and would like to know how to put the mbr onto this other drive.

i thought copying the drives /etc/lilo.conf to the local /etc/ directory and running lilo might work, but it doesn't seem to...

i dont actually need to use the old lilo.conf as i'll have one less drive, but i'll just pick linux so it's no big deal...

any ideas?

Edit your /etc/lilo.conf, change the boot= line to point to the hard drive whose MBR is read on bootup. Then rerun /sbin/lilo.

this is odd, 'fdisk -l' says that /dev/hdb1 is bootable...

Knoppix mounts your partitions read-only: you'll have to remount them in read-write mode before running lilo: "mount -w -o remount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1"

As for the "Fatal: /dev/hdb1 is not a master device with a primary parition table" error: you should run "lilo.real -M /dev/hdb" instead of "lilo.real -M /dev/hdb1"

ahh. where do i put the fs type? it asks: "

# mount -w -o remount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/hdb1
mount: you must specify the filesystem type

"

i think it is mounted read-write, if i do :

# mount
/dev/root on / type ext2 (rw)
/dev/cdrom on /cdrom type iso9660 (ro)
/dev/cloop on /KNOPPIX type iso9660 (ro)
/ramdisk on /ramdisk type tmpfs (rw,size=407028k)
usb on /proc/bus/usb type usbdevfs (rw,devmode=0666)
automount(pid313) on /mnt/auto type autofs (rw,fd=4,pgrp=313,minproto=2,maxproto=4)
/dev/hdb1 on /mnt/hdb1 type ext3 (rw)
"

or am i missing something?
