rdist losing connection

Hi all

I'm trying set up rdist on two servers behind a firewall. They've got full access to talk to one another, but the relevant ports needed for rsh are closed to the outside world (so we've got a little security while using the r* family).

Running an update I get this:
Code:
SRVR2: updating host SRVR2
SRVR2: LOCAL ERROR: Lost connection to SRVR2
SRVR2: updating of SRVR2 finished
Passing the path to rdistd doesn't help:
Code:
# rdist -p /bin/rdistd -f /etc/rdist.conf
SRVR2: updating host SRVR2
SRVR2: SRVR1: REMOTE ERROR: server: expected control record
SRVR2: updating of SRVR2 finished
If I run "rsh SRVR2 rdistd -S" from SRVR1 I get the following error:
Code:
SRVR1: REMOTE ERROR: server: expected control record
Running "rdistd -S" on SRVR2 works fine.

AFAIK the permissions are set up correctly. "rsh SRVR2 ls -al" works fine.

Any ideas where the problem might be?
