Quickly managing 'clipped' items -- how?

Hi,
Im looking for a way in which can somehow copy several pieces of text into different registers, and then somehow manipulate which item will be pasted without going back to the program (ie, from anywhere with some sort of command on keyboard).

example:
ive got two items pasted in like register 1 and register 2 - bob, and smith

i go to one location and press something, and 'bob' gets pasted
i go to another input location and press something else and 'smith' gets pasted.

any ideas?

There are several programs that can help you here. There's a KDE tool (klipper), a Window Maker tool (wmcliphist http://linux.nawebu.cz/wmcliphist/), and a Gnome Clipboard Manager applet (http://gcm.sourceforge.net/).

There may be others…
