questions on mythtv backend usage

Thanks in advance for all help.

I am going to attempt to set up MythTV at my home.

I have a desktop that exceeds all the MythTV hardware requirements and I have one tv for viewing.

I want to know if this will work as a setup. I plan to buy a large hard drive to dedicate to mythtv and a hardware encoding tv capture card for my current desktop and use it as a backend. I then hope to use an x-box for a frontend.

My main hesitation is that I want to continue to use my desktop for its other uses (documents, internet, music, etc). As a backend, I understand it requires mysql to be running and will be writing continuously to the hard disk.

Will I be able to use my desktop for other uses while someone else is watching tv or recording?

Has anyone else tried to do this, and how does it work for you?

This is my first time to try MythTV and I will likely expand as resources allow, but if this could work for now, I will start with this.

Thanks.

Yes, when watching over the network the backend consumes very little CPU/Memory. Make sure you have enough network bandwidth(10Mbs should do it). I do it myself and the CPU doesn't go over 5%......but that is an AMDX2 ;-)
