Questions about nut..finding ups dev address

Being a newb I am unsure of how to setup nut to access my ups via the usb cable that is included. All the documentation that I can find only tells you how to use your ups on a serial port. How about a usb port? How do I find the correct device address with usb?

The Nut documentation is below to give you an idea of what they are looking for:

Set ownership data and permissions on your serial or USB ports
that go to your UPS hardware. Be sure to limit access to just
the user you created earlier.
These examples assume the second serial port (ttyS1) on a typical Slackware system. On FreeBSD, that would be cuaa1. Serial ports vary greatly, so yours may be called something else.

chmod 0600 /dev/ttyS1
chown nut:nut /dev/ttyS1

NOTE: if you are using something like devfs, make sure these permissions stay set across a reboot. If they revert to the old values, your drivers may fail to start.

Plug the device in and run dmesg

The device should be listed towards the bottom of the list.

USB devices on Linux are sda sdb etc.

this is from dmesg

usb 3-1: new low speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
hiddev96: USB HID v1.10 Device [APC Back-UPS ES 350 FW:800.e5.D USB FW:e5] on usb-0000:00:10.1-1

how do I determine if this is sda or sdb?

Ok, under dev I do not have sda or sdb. But i have this

usbdev3.3 and others like it. Should I assume that my ups is usbdev3.1. based on what I see in dmesg?

If you are like creedog and have an APC unit, then it would be a lot easier to set up apcupsd: http://apcupsd.com/

Also, the USB connection to the UPS should fall under Human Interface Devices (HID) and is probably hiddev0 (or hiddev1, ... hiddev15), or at least that’s how it works with apcupsd.

Look around /dev and you should be able to find one or more candidates (e.g., /dev/hiddev0, /dev/usb/hiddev0 or /dev/usb/hid/hiddev0, depending on your OS).

I was never able to get NUT working. Which stinks becuase its got some really cool features. However got apcuspd working mainly due to the fact that in the config if you have a usb connection you just select usb. It does the rest.

I works but is slim on the features.
