question about VI/VIM and ssh via putty
i have been using putty a LOT to get into one of my linux workstations and having to edit several .conf or .list files.
my typing is not always the best and i am prone to typos. this can be a problem when i really dont know what im doing half the time. is there a way to copy from M$ windows into a putty ssh seassion while i have vi/vim up editing a file? i know i can copy out of the ssh into windows as i do that all the time, but how do i go the other way, or can i even go the other way? |
- go to "insert mode" in vi/vim
- then copy the text in e.g. notepd and paste into putty - press ESC to exit "insert mode" - save work |
paste with the P command? that is out of 'i' mode...
someone said i could right click and it would paste. for some reason it does work in my RH9 box, but not my debian box. both are running VIM, but i would take it my debian has a more current vs of vim as i installed it via apt-get install vim just the other day, and i know there are no new rpms for RH9 so the vim i have with that is probably a few years old. does that make a differance? |
Better late then never...
Enter insert mode in the vim instance that is running within a putty window. Then try holding Shift while you Right-Click to paste (assuming that your putty window is set to "Compromise" mode for selections). |
If that's RH9 codename Shrike http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Hat_Linux then its extremely old, unsupported and wide open to exploits.
For your own sake and others, use a modern distro eg Fedora 10 or 11, Centos 5.3 (if at all possible). If its not that one, ignore this. |
