Question about partitioning

I just got rid of Windows XP by formating my drive, so now there is no partition at all and it is just a blank unusable drive. I am currently booting from the Knoppix cd and running linux that way but can't save anything. I configured my printer as a test to see if anything was being saved at all and on restart the printer was gone. How do I fix this? I have a 30 gig hard drive and would like to do several partitions. I would prefer doing this by code in the root shell or the Terminal program to do this. I am trying to learn from scratch how to use Linux and although I am using GUI versions I want to learn the code while I go about it. Thank you!

did you actually run the save config program?? I can't remember the executable name, but it's in every menu in each UI available. it will save changes to a config.tbz2 file ona given partition, which you can load on boot.

Partitioning

It shows the printer as being saved but on restart it's gone. It also shows two small hard drives (partitions) but they are really small (only about 350 megabytes) If I go--add new device--hard drive--then it automatically adds a 1.9gb hard drive but what if I want it a difference size? I'm also not sure if it actually is saving that partition. How do I just paritition my drive into let's say 3 different partitions, one for programs, one for files, and one for personal? Thanks!
