Quake II

I got quake II installed and working after messing with the GL drivers for quite a while, and now i finally have quake with GLX running under X in fullscreen, and graphics is very good (Nvidia drivers). How ever i can't get the mouse to work in quake. When i click the mouse, the player shoots like it should, but it totally ignores any mouse movement. Also i can slide the mouse to the other screen, or roll the wheel and change the virtual desktop and leave quake on desktop one. Practically the mouse is not being used, but the mouse clicks are working, but both in X and in Quake. It's hard to explain. It's like X is not giving quake the control over the mouse, so all the movements of the mouse are ignored in quake, but still work in X.
I also tried console GL, soft console (SVGAlib, and softx) but i had bigger problems. So does anyone have any tips on how to get quake to recognize the mouse movement and use it?
Thank you very much

I hope your not using the origianl qauke2 bins from ID software, because if you are thats your first problem.

try http://www.icculus.org/quake2/
or http://quakeforge.net/

Thank you, i think that'll solve all of my probs. In the end i got the ID's quake 2 to work in console with SVGAlib, but grpaphics is crappy, and mouse is jumpy, but it works. I can't stay on-line for a long time, so unfortunately i can"t try out all the quake 2 ports mentioned on the pages you gave me, i will as soon as i get a faster connection. It's good to know quake 2 is well supported on Linux, although as myu experience so far teaches me, it takes a fair bit of hacking to get it to work well... hopefully these problems are resolved in the ports available for download on the above mentioned sites.
Again thank yoy

Is your GLX setup and working properly? Can you run glxgears and get good framerates? What does glxinfo say? After i installed and setup the nvidia drivers correctly, i compiled quake and run it in softX, then changed to glx which works, but the mouse lags a lot, so i changed it to SDL_glx which works like a champ!
First things first, check if your glw setup is working properly, can you play other 3d games and get good framerates?
The errors you get are reffering to libraries that dont exist, so i suspect your glx is messed up or you messed up the quake installation somehow.

My openGL works perfect... Half-life (in wine) works great, glgear's works, FlightGear works, foobilliards works.

i have no doubt in my mind opengl works...
glxinfo, gives loads of info, but here's the interesting parts...

server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce4 MX 440/AGP/3DNOW

so im pretty sure openGL itself is not the problem.

you say you compiled quake, that is probably my problem...
i tried the quake RPM's and although i solved all the package dependency's it would not run, seems it didnt like my quake2(origonal windows install disk) cd's PAK files...

But i have got quake to work from downloading the pre-compiled tar.gz package,

looks like the next step in my quest is the source...
i found the .shar.Z source package on id's ftp site, but it seems this is not quake2's complete source, the read me says its just the source needed for writing mods.

where can i download this quake2 source ?

Ohh, and THANKS for answering me, there are questions like this all over this forum, you you seem to be the only sucess story, (congratulations)

i found an open source quake 2 project in sourceforge.

it sent me to icculus.org.

im downloading the source, source rpm, and rpm at the moment.
(i install source only if rpm's dont work, rpm -qa | grep is GREAT)

Use the ports of quake from http://www.icculus.org/quake2/, i got those ones to work well. I got quake to work on all of my machines, so i'm pretty sure its just a question of doing the right things and having the right packages. If you still don't get it working e-mail me and i'll write you what i did step by step, but plz do this as a last resource, since i have very little free time lately.
good luck

Thanks for the offer, but its not neccesary.
i downloaded the open source linux port, and everything is working great.

i compiled with the MAX option, and downloaded the extra max PAK file from the link specified in the README, and everything works great, PLUS the game looks alot beter than the windows version....

thanX for the link.
