Quake 3 low frame-rate/laggyness and HL prob...

When I run Q3 I get a low frame rate...around the 30's...everything looks perfect, but its just everything is a tad slow...like i move the mouse and its a little laggy to swing around, that sort of thing...the guide that i was following to get Half Life installed and running said to check that Q3/any other games with native OpenGL to make sure they run smoothly, if not correct it, but they don't say HOW to correct it, LOL!

This is the guide: http://lhl.linuxgames.com/howto/half...HOWTO-0.5.html

And with one other problem with Half Life...when i try to go into Configure, and select OpenGL HL just locks up and i have to switch consoles and kill wine...the guide said this may happen, and the way to correct it is to make sure that the video modes you want to run are available in XF86config, which they are (I'm just testing 800x600 as its simple, and yes its in XF86config)...any idea's on that maybe?

I ran HL a couple of times in software mode and had no sound, then one time i opened it up and had sound, but then haven't had it again...and i don't have any sound in Q3....this isn't really important at the moment, ill try and correct this after we can hopefully get the FPS up a little...

Hmmm, I'm NEARLY! there with converting over....

have you installed your video card drivers? If you have a nvidia card the default nv drivers aren't very fast at all and you need to install drivers.

Do i have to have any special software like wine to gent q3 and HL running on a mandrake9.0 box? Yes, I know this is not an answer to your question... but whatever...

Try installing the videocard drivers instead of the default kernel drivers... that could help.

If that doesn't work try asking Mr Torvalds about it ;)

Quake has a nitive linux port, you install it by mounting your win quake cd and then running the linux quake point release. No need to muck around with wine for quake, ut, ut2003 or rtcw, they all have linux ports.

Ok, could you be any more specific please.

And what about Half Life??

Aussie 12-03-2002 06:33 PM

1) Download the latest quake3 linux point release.
2) Mount your quake3 cd.
3) Run the linux point reelease you just downloaded (as root) to install.
4) I don't have half life so I can't help you with that.

Yeah... I'd already figured it out. Do I need to install it from a graphical environment??? Will it work with KDE 3.0???

Aussie 12-03-2002 07:39 PM

Yes, the installer needs X to be running (it's based on the old loki installer), you can use it in any GUI, kde, gnome, *box etc...

Ciccio 12-03-2002 08:06 PM

Ok, I'll try it....

BTW do you happend to know where I can download this Quake3 Linux point???

Thanks a lot :Pengy:

ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux/

Didn't work from the website. I tried fileplanet but it's the worst thing I culd have done. Anyway, I'll try tomorrow from another box (one with broadband).

I've downloaded wine anyway... as soon as i figure out how to use it I'll try runnign half life. (and about quake... I think i'll stick to linux point release... don't you agree?)

Thanks again. :Pengy:
