Quake 3 Crashing

Hi all i got this strange problem when i run quake in single player mode it crashes as soon as i enter the game , but when i play an online game it crashes at "awaiting snapshot"
I discovered if i disable sound it plays perfect but its a bit rubbish without sound , has anyone got any ideas on this ?

im using Mandrake 9.1 if you need any other info let me know

How did you get the game to even work? I have tried to get this game to work on my computer for three years. Did you just install the game and it worked or did you have to tinker with it? Thanks!

what video card do you have? i tried to run q3 on my box with a radeon 7500, and it kept freezing, but then i got a radeon 9000 and the drivers for it and it worked fine. hope that helps.

I got a Geforce4 mx440 nothing special but does the job i think its my onboard sound i just this second went out and brought a creative SB live 5.1 i hope this solves my problem

I have an 8MB ATI Rage Mobility p video card. As per the sys. requirements, it should be enough.
