Quake 3 Arena error on nvidia card...


Hi,

Ive only recently got into Linux, and i have Slackware 9.1 installed and working, and I have installed the nvidia driver cos I had to in order to get X to work...this is what ive done so far:-


Copied the pak0.pk3 file from the CD to /usr/local/games/quake3/baseq3/ and then downloaded the Point Release 1.32b linux.run file and installed it (all went well), but when i go into a console and type 'quake3', I get this error:-

I know its saying that it cant start my OpenGL Subsystem, but has anyone come across this problem before and managed to fix it?

If you need any more info, just ask, I have selected 'nvidia' in xf86conf, I know I have cos before hand (before installing the nvidia drivers) I couldn't use the startx command

Any help would be really greatfull

I've changed a few things from the original one i was using, just gonna go reboot X see if it works after the changes....

Could really do with some help, im a big linux n00b

Ok, erm, me nvidia drivers wernt installed properly

Reinstalled them, set a few extra features from the Nvidia readme.txt and i get past that error above....i now get stuck on a blank screen with my mouse curser and have to press ctrl+c to exit....copy and paste:-

Any ideas?

Edit: Im using the alsa drivers on a Audigy2 sound card...works fine within Linux (XMMS and mplayer work fine)...

Thanx to some help from Beren on IRC, its working!!!! \o/

I need to use these 2 commands:-

[14:52] <Beren> echo "quake3.x86 0 0 disable" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
[14:52] <Beren> echo "quake3.x86 0 0 direct" > /proc/asound/card0/pcm0p/oss

Those two commands do not solve the problem. Quake III will run seemingly perfect until you enter a match. At this point, your game will freeze, only closable by killing the process.

It seems we have an issue on our hands that yet to be solved by anyone. If anyone reading this is using ESD or another mixer program besides ALSA and is able to get Quake III running with sound while having other programs access the sound card (perhaps playing music via XMMS while playing Quake), please me know.

alternative.

I have found a decent alternative to fixing our sound problem: play Quake III Arena under Cedera (the latest WineX). I currently use this to play the game, though I can't seem to get PunkBuster working. Back when I didn't use ALSA, I used to play the native Linux version, so I have experienced both that and the Wine'd version. They're exactly the same, with the exception of PunkBuster, although I'm sure someone will figure it out. I don't play anything but LAN games, so I don't even need it.
