Question Qmail setup

I followed lifewithqmail.com instructions to setup Qmail on my RH8 server. I uses Maildir and qmail-pop3d for my mailbox. Everything went fine to the end. My question is what do I need to do now? How do I know if Qmail is setup right? Last, how do I setup Evolution to send/receive mail on my machine? Please Help

ok if you haven't already go though the instructions on lifewithqmail section 2.9 Test the installation. If you don't have the TEST.deliver and TEST.receive files you can find them at the official qmail site in the User-Contributed Documentation section (first link)

you can set up evolution by going to the tools menu and selecting settings, mail accounts and hit add.

Ok, I followed the TEST.deliver & .receive instruction. Everything work fine except I didn't get the test mail.

I did setup my mail account on Evolution. But, when I tried to send mail. I received this error.

"Error while 'Sending "test"':
SMTP server rh8server does not support requested authenticates type PLAIN.

anymore suggestion???? Thanks again for your help.

qmailctl stop

find out what mail server you were running before you installed qmail. not sure how RH8 starts stops services but you need to make sure postfix/sendmail is not running.

ps -e grep smtp, should get a null result. if not, find out what's running and kill it.

now try the tests as before. If you get the same error it looks like whatever mail server (sendmail or postfix) is stilll listening on port 25 for a connection. that's bad if you want qmail as your smtp.

check your inetd.conf (or xinetd.conf) and comment out the smtp line.

ps -e | grep inetd (or xinetd), get the process id (PID) and send it a HUP signal with 'kill -HUP ##

now fire up qmail again and try the tests.

sounds like maybe you are trying to send a plain text password, most likely you don't need a password at all so check to see if you have checked the box server requires authorization (you can find that under the sending mail tab of the mail accounts setup.

also checlk your logs, they are normally under /var/log/qmail/smtpd/ and the most recent log is probably current if you are running daemontools.

p.s. you may want to run the log through tai64nlocal first so you get real dates and times. just type something like

tail -100 /var/log/qmail/smtpd/current | tai64nlocal | less

mcleodnine, Sendmail was installed before I installed Qmail. But, I removed it and stop all services for it. I also removed the RPMs. When I run

ps -ef | grep smtp or smtpd

all I get is qmail-smtpd service on the return.

Sutekh, when I run the

tail -100 /var/log/qmail/smtpd/current | tail64nlocal | less

I get an error about tail64nlocal

So, I ran tail -100 /var/log/qmail/smtpd/current
Here are the result

'tai64nlocal' (not tail) is part of the daemontools package. try it again.

also - what does 'qmailctl stat' return?

You want to look at /var/log/qmail/smtpd/current to see inbound connections. pipe it through tai64nlocal as well.

Also make absolutely sure another smtpd isn't picking up the mail by checking the /var/log/maillog (or whatever logs your previous smtpd was using. you may have to look around in the /va/log directory).

I tried sending a message to the above address and got the following
Code:
Apr 19 23:35:53 bettik postfix/smtp[29868]: connect to
  cojo-online.com[66.143.153.142]: Connection refused (port 25)
Apr 19 23:35:53 bettik postfix/smtp[29868]: 442FBA6D:
 to=<cojo@cojo-online.com>, relay=none, delay=1, status=deferred
 (connect to cojo-online.com[66.143.153.142]: Connection refused)
Either your machine is not accepting inbound mail or your ISP is blocking incoming port 25

how do I check if my machine is accepting inbound mail? As for my ISP, I could find out if they are blocking incoming port 25. I don't believe they are.

erm. ok it's probably in /var/qmail/control

These are the control files that you use to tell qmail how to run
