qmail problems delaying external email

I am in dire need of some assistance. I am new to Linux so know very little about this software but I have inheritted an external email server that is running Linux RedHat. I had a power failure about one month ago that shut down this server. When I was finally able to get the server back up emails started functioning again with the exception that some of the emails that were being sent from our network and some that were coming into our network were being delayed. Sometimes the delay would be an hour or so, sometimes several hours, sometimes the next day or in some instances the email would never be delivered. This is currently going on and has been every since I rebooted the crashed server.

The system is running qmail and also has spamassassin loaded. As I stated above I do not know a great deal about Linux so any help anyone might provide me with not only what or where I should look but any information on how I can troubleshoot this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

This suggests it could be due to DNS problems

Still looking for advice

Thanks Micah for the suggestion. I am still not absolutely sure I have the problem resolved but I did find that the /var directory was utilizing 100% of its allocated resources. I deleted some old log files off of /var. That freed up some space. So far since doing that I have not seen any further email delays. I am going to watch and see if this eliminates my problem. If anyone has any further thoughts on this I would appreciate everyone's advice.

Steve
