"But it keeps saying i have python 2.1"

What distribution are you using?

What is "it" i.e. what software is giving you the message that you still have python 2.1?

Type in "python", then hit tab twice to list out any executable in your path that starts with "python". If the install of 2.3 went without an error, it's prob'ly there. The problem might be that 2.1 is still there, and a plain "python" will call 2.1 instead of 2.3. You can get around that problem by specifying "python2.3".
