Question Puzzled... growisofs error

Hi.

I've been having a weird problem burning an ISO image to a DVD-R media. The DVD drive is a Sony DVD+/-RW DRU-540A. The DVD media is Fujifilm 8x DVD-R's.

I have been able to burn images onto the Fujifilm DVD-R media without any problem, either by calling growisofs directly or using k3b, until recently. However, all of a sudden, I started getting the following error as I ran "growisofs."
Code:
[root@daihard-tl10 temp2]# growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/dvd=cm_dvd16.iso
Executing 'builtin_dd if=cm_dvd16.iso of=/dev/dvd obs=32k seek=0'
:-[ PERFORM OPC failed with SK=3h/ASC=73h/ACQ=03h]: Input/output error
The only thing I've done between the time that it used to work and now is some CD ripping using KAudioCreator (i.e. cdparanoia and lame). There was a few CD's that KAudioCreator didn't like, so I had to run cdparanoia manually in order to rip those discs. I don't think that's caused this problem, though.

How should I go about this problem? Can this be a hardware error that just so happened at this timing? I can still read CD/DVD media using the drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dai

This is a long shot, but have you tried inserting the empty dvd before starting k3b. I know it sounds weird, but I had an error like that once... I think it's worth a try

Thanks for the reply.

I usually have a DVD media in the tray before I start k3b. I made sure it was the case before I tried again this morning. Unfortunately, the result was the same.

The weirder thing is, I can still burn CDs without any problem.

It turned out to be a bad burner...

I plugged in my wife's NEC burner to burn data onto the DVD disc that failed with my Sony drive. It worked beautifully. The OPC operation came back immediately with the write speed information. The Sony drive must have been acting up from the beginning - well it at least worked until yesterday!

So I drove down to Fry's to get a new burner - a Plextor PX-716A. I am going to call the Sony support centre tomorrow to see if I can get a new one. If I do, I am going to sell it on eBay or some other place.

Thanks for your attention, anyway!
