putty and ssh trouble

Everytime I copy and paste more than 1 line of text from my windows machine to my ssh server via putty, it doesn't seem to refresh the screen on putty properly.

It's extremely hard to explain but it makes it very difficult to go back and delete a few characters or see the beginning of the cmd I typed. I'm guessing this is not normal because i've tried using other servers using putty and I don't have this issue.

I have no idea if it's a putty issue or something to do with my ssh server, so I don't know where to start to fix this.

I made a video of it.

Wow, I'm an idiot. I just disabled the colors on the prompt and now its working.

Anyone know why this happens when you add colors to your prompt?

If you don't properly escape the color character sequences, bash thinks they are normal characters. All bash knows is the width of the terminal in characters and the amount of characters currently on the line. It gets confused when you have non-printing characters that mess up the line sequence.

That is a very distinct possibility. How do I escape the color character sequences?
