Putting my application in the system tray

hi
I am writing a daemon,
which will continuously monitor n/w traffic in the background,
& if it finds something suspicious, it will alert the admin with a pop up window
for this purpose I want a system tray icon for my application,
How shud I proceed?

I have developed my n/w taffic analyzer in C ( under linux )

there is no universal way to do this for any windowmanager, but if you are using KDE, try this
if you are using gnome or another windowmanager, you'll have to find you own link, sorry.

I will try it out!

any idea of how the message passing shud be done between the daemon & the system tray icon.
the daemon will be passing alerts,
& the tray icon shud be able to display those alerts in a Pop Up Window
