pure-ftpd connection problem

I'm currently running Gentoo Linux and I just installed a Pure-ftpd server. I configured and started the server with no extra options. When I try to connect to the server once I put my password in it just disconnects me and says connection closed by remote host. I've tried logging in using my linux account, root, and anonymous... none work. I also made sure that my shell is in the /etc/shells file which is what had caused me to have this problem in the past.

I then recompiled the program using virtual users and the same problem occurred.

I tried all of this with two different versions of the software including the newest 7a release. I'm not sure what else to try, anyone have any suggestions. Thanks!

If your trying to connect to this FTP server remotely, then it's very possible this could be a NAT/firewall issue. The initial FTP connection is made on port 21 which I presume you have already forwarded.

After the login phase, passive FTP will negotiate another port to talk on. You may need to adjust settings in this FTP server and/or your firewall/NAT device.

Try connecting to the ftp server locally, or even try connecting to it via the server itself. If your certain this is not a firewall/nat issue, perhaps try another FTP server.

Regards,
Erik
