public key authentication when connecting to web host

I would appreciate any knowledge or insights concerning this topic. I am failing to connect to ipage using ssh or sftp with public key authentication (I have to enter password). I am starting to suspect that ipage doesn't support pubkey as I am running out of things to try differently. Do webhosts generally allow pubkey? Is pubkey overkill in this context. My main goal is to responsibly automate the process of uploading clients information. Thanks in advance for any help.

Did you actually copy the key over? And what does 'ssh -v username@ho.st' return? (If needed add "-vv" or even "-vvv" for more detail.)

yes, I renamed the public key and put it into a dir which I created: ~/.ssh/
When I execute the following script:

ssh -2 -vv -i /home/jesse/.ssh/id_rsa -p 2222 USER@ftp.ipage.com

after my password is approved I get:

PTY allocation request failed on channel 0

and it returns to my PS1 prompt. sftp lets me in. I posted my process earlier at the following:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...in-4175414494/

I am still going to experiment but I suspect that ipage (my web host) doesn't support what I am trying to do and I was hoping someone could confirm or deny this before I waste more time. But its been a learning experience. In any case, I appreciate your response

Usually 'ssh -vv' returns more than just a single line and showing complete output (obfuscating IP addresses and account names) IMO would have been better. The "PTY allocation request failed" says it doesn't allocate a pseudo-terminal (regular login). I can't find the right CLI SSH option to force allocating one in 'man ssh' so yeah, maybe your host lets you use a rssh / scp-only-like SFTP shell. Their docs or asking their helpdesk should show.

Thanks unSpawn. I appreciate your advice. I will investigate the matter further with ipage. Perhaps the restricted shell precludes the use of public keys--the source of the problem.
