proxy authentication in mozilla

hi there,

i am in the process of switching from windows to linux suse 9.1 (finally) and to make it less of a jump into darkness i am still running both versions on my laptop. For this reason i installed mozilla in both OSs as my mail-program, so that i can have an up-to-date account in whatever OS i am currently working in.
the only problem is that i didn't manage to really use it yet, because my university is using a proxy-firewall which requires a proxy authentication - namely an id and password. a proxy url for http_proxy and a part are not enough, and unfortunately mozilla does not offer an id and password setting in its preferences. (i have the same problem with kopete) .
i have been playing around with this for quite a while and would be happy if somebody could tell me how to solve this problem.
thanks for helping a motivated newbie :)

you'll have to know what kind of authentication you need. some proxy's are configured to give you a popup windows to enter your user/pass. they usually require http 1.1, which should be ok with mozilla. here it seems the proxy is looking for something in the (http)headers to give you access.
contact the admin of your proxy about that. he/she should be able to give you the info you need.
