programs slow after I connect

Every application on my computer works fine when I'm not connected. The problem comes when I connect. Many apps take forever to open.
I use an internal modem. I am running Mandrake 9.1, I installed it yesterday and I am using kppp to connect.
Some applications aren't slow to when I am connected.

Some examples of apps that open and don't open:
don't open:
evolution
kate
konqueror file manager

open:
kwrite
Web browsers(konqueror,mozilla,opera)
Ark
xpdf

Maybe someone has an answer.

I fixed it. I just enabled the network interfaces services.
