Program Not opening
 

Hey everyone...well i just reinstalled linux for certain reasons but now when i go to audio player it doesn't open at all...i have rebooted and reinstalled the application but it still doesn't do anything..is there some other way i can open it? i have tried with the run application but no luck there either. thx in advance

XMMS Audio Player..(i have the mp3 plugin loaded)

its possible that there was an error in it the first time adn that would be the reason it wouldnt open then and now it still has some sort of link to the empty direcory, try opening it with the full path to where you now have it installed

ok thx...that sounds right...but where would a program like xmms audio player be? in like what folder?

ok i found where it was linked to in the /usr/bin/xmms but when i clikc on it is anything suppose to happen? i don't think anything should b/c it is a binary program. now i looked to see where the audio player was linked right now and it was linked here.
/usr/share/desktop-menu-patches/redhat-audio-player.desktop
that looks like to me that it is the wrong directory..and when i clikc on audio player there nothing happens either...but i think everything else opens. how do i redirect it to the link in the /usr/bin/xmms directory?

Open a terminal and try to start xmms from the command line. You should be able to just type "xmms". See if it gives you any error messages and post them here.

if there's something wrong with a program (like it crashing when it starts) you won't see that information if you're trying to start it by double-clicking an icon; only from the terminal.

if just "xmms" doesnt work use "/usr/bin/xmms"

if people started using terminals, they wouldn't think of 'folders', eh?
anyways, I'm sure if you post an error, someone can help you out...maybe for some reasons you dont have the correct permissions.

http://bugs.xmms.org and fill out a bug report.

hhhmmm your best bet may be to contact the people at xmms and ask them if they know what is wrong, a bug report most likely wont help them if you dont have any experience in writing them but if you contact them they may be able to help you and they can setup a dialogue with you that will let them find the bug, until then i would reccomend finding another player to use

you may though want to at least follow the link to see if they have a really generic form which you can fill out

Where did you get xmms? Was it included in your distro install? Or did you download the source code and compile it yourself?

If you feel comfortable doing this, I'd suggest uninstalling it, and then reinstalling. The executable you have now is just plain broken. You'll have to replace it or get another program to do what you need.

no i didn't download the source and complie it mightself...and i have reinstalled linux 2 times correctly....first time installing a os on a new hdd...got the ide cables mixed up about 3 times...but me and my friend finally got it right. well my friend downloaded the os off the redhat site and burned them on three discs so that is how i got them...it installs fine and all but just some things don't work as they don't for many people.
