program install problems

I would like to run Descent1 in Linux, and have finally hunted down D1X source and am trying to compile/install it without much luck. I followed the instructions to copy defines.in to defines.mak, edited it for SDL, ran 'make dep' from the d1x directory and got these errors:

set -e; for I in arch maths 2d 3d texmap misc mem iff cfile main ; do make -k dep -C $I;done
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/install/d1x/arch'
rm dep.dep
rm: cannot remove `dep.dep': No such file or directory
make[1]: [dep] Error 1 (ignored)
make dep2_internal

towards the middle this shows up:

In file included from ../../main/game.h:212,
from joydefs.c:25:
../../include/vecmat.h:250:18: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:251:18: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:261:17: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:262:17: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:473:17: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:474:24: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:475:15: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:476:15: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:478:18: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:479:25: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:480:15: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:481:15: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:483:18: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:484:25: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:485:15: backslash and newline separated by space
../../include/vecmat.h:486:15: backslash and newline separated by space
make[3]: *** [joydefs.dep2] Error 1

^ I don't have a joystick installed on this box, so that most likely is this cause, correct?

and then towards the end it displays this:

../../arch/linux/include -D__LINUX__ -D_REENTRANT -D__SDL__ -I../../arch/sdl/include -DSDL_INPUT -DSDL_AUDIO -I../../main -MM arch_ip.cpp >> dep.dep
/bin/sh: line 1: gxx: command not found
make[3]: *** [arch_ip.dep2] Error 127
gcc -g -c -Wall -O3 -funsigned-char -I../../include -DNDEBUG -fomit-frame-pointer -DNMONO -DNETWORK -DRELEASE -Werror -DD1XMAJOR=\"1\" -DD1XMINOR=\"43\" -I../../arch/dos/include -DSUPPORTS_NET_IP -DSDL_GL -I../../arch/ogl/include -DOGL -I../../arch/linux/include -D__LINUX__ -D_REENTRANT -D__SDL__ -I../../arch/sdl/include -DSDL_INPUT -DSDL_AUDIO -I../../main -MM hmistub.c >> dep.dep
make[3]: Target `dep2_internal' not remade because of errors.
make[3]: Leaving directory `/root/install/d1x/arch/linux'
make[2]: *** [dep] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/root/install/d1x/arch/linux'
make[1]: *** [dep] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/root/install/d1x/arch'
make: *** [dep] Error 2

any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? I know d1x is buggy, but I keep hearing theses success stories of running it in linux... I'm a site admin for a popular Descent site, and write reviews for levels. I'm very anxious to start writing reviews on not only Descent3 but Descent1 levels... hence my earnestness with d1x...

Lacking fast enough comps for OpenGL
I never tried to run/compile D1x in Linux,
but I used to play D1x a lot :) from Windows.

May I ask which popular site you're admin
off? :)

Cheers,
Tink

http://www.planetdescent.com

They're actually working on getting a larger trunk for the site. Right now, it's horridly slow..
