proftpd AuthUserFile problem

i just simply can't make the AuthUserFile work. if i specify it in proftpd.conf the ordinary people with accounts can't log in, which means it actually cares about the directive. but the users listed in the authuserfile can't log in. they're created with the ftpasswd script. any help?

and i can't have /bin/false as the users shells. it won't work
