ProFTPd. Authenticating using /etc/passwd instead of PAM

I feel like such a dumb*** for asking so many questions all within one day. I've looked around the net a lot, and there is lots of information ... but incomplete information. How would I go about having ProFTPd authenticate users using /etc/passwd instead of PAM? The ProFTPd website states PAM is the most secure way, but on my home server, security is not an issue and I'd rather have one account for all services on the server. I'm not sure if that made sense... :)

FYI, I'm a complete newbie. I just got Slackware running early this morning.

I think that pam will eventually look to your /etc/passwd anyways, unless you tell it otherwise. PAM just set more controls checks.

I found that out after lots and lots of reading from so many different sites and IRC channels. I still couldn't get ProFTPd to authenticate users. I eventually removed the package and installed PureFTPd.
