process query

hello

I installed linux for the first time a couple of days ago. Since then I also installed maya8.5 but when I try and run maya i get a segmentation fault, signal: 11. I understand this is a very general error code but if run nvidia-settings before maya, maya loads with no errors.

My question is not maya specific. Is there a way to query or get a detailed log of what a process is doing? In this case I'd like to repeat the action in question on startup or get an insight of what I suspect could be a more general problem.

any suggestions are highly welcome,
thanks in advance

See /var/log/* , specifically /var/log/dmesg for boot msgs, /var/log/messages for sw that doesn't have it's own log (and any (system noted) side-effects of those that do)
