Problems with WINE on Mandrake 9.1
 

Hi all. I'm new to Linux and this forum. I'm not running on Linux.. I'm posting this to help my friend who has just switched to mdk 9.1.. He's only got 128 MB of RAM. It's a 2001 model 1 GHz IBM Aptiva. I tried to install and get WINE working but I couldn't. I downloaded the RPM and I installed that. I would have gone with the src but it wanted Bison and even Bison wouldn't compile right. After installing the WINE from the binary RPM I try to run it and it says it needs a DOS drive. I go searching around on the net and I find that I need the TCLTK setup program(s). So I get those and it complains that something ELSE is missing. What am I doing wrong? If I can't get this to work for him I'm going to help him switch over to Debian where it's as easy as an apt-get install wine and it all set up. I think I should have recomended him to download and install Debian in the first place. Is there an apt-get type package manager that retrieves all dependencies under Mandrake 9.1? Is the Mandrake Cooker similar? If there is that would be very helpful. I'll add more detail as you respond to this. Thanks...

What's wrong with the Mdk packages off the cd?

Why are you using Wine? What command did you use which made it say it needed a DOS drive? From what I know of Wine you have to set up a fake windows harddrive in a sub folder of your linux filesystem.

The Install Software menu item/in the Mandrake Control Center will install all depended packages off the cd too.

Does Mandrake 9.1 come with WINE? My friend wants to use WINE for programs like WinMX and KaZaA. Would WineTools help me help him create a fake C drive? All I typed was wine and it gives me that error... Thanks for replying.

why couldn't you do apt-get with mdk? go download it and when you have it installed do an apt-get install synaptic to get the gui for apt-get and browse through the list and select wine and wine-devel from the list and install it....and actually i am looking at the list now, and they have winex available also...once you get it installed, go get winetools which will make your fake dos/windows drive for you, and then you'll be ready to go...

Thanks Ozz! The next time I'm over there I'll do it and I'll do it for myself when I have my MDK 9.1 system up. Can't I also just type it tradtionally like this: apt-get install wine and apt-get install wine-devel? The GUI would be good... but I'm used to doing it like that... apt-get was ported to Mac OS X under the name of Fink, so I'm quite familiar with it. Anyway, thanks so much. I'll be sure to have this page open when I go over to his house next.

oh yes for sure you can do that...i just thought now a days people like gui apps, so i just thought i would stick that in, just in case you were one of those people :D

Heh. Since I'll be the doing it for him I don't mind either. Somehow the Linux CLI isn't as annoying as DOS's...

Here's another question: how do I make shortcuts to Windows programs on the Linux desktop (whether it be GNOME or KDE)? I've seen screenshots on the WINE homepage that have apps such as KaZaA Lite on the desktop. I wanna make it easy for him as possible. Also how do you configure it so that any Win32 app can be executed by a simple double click?

well, you will make a shortcut like any other shortcut, but just put "wine" in front of the command, such as:
wine /home/user/.wine/c/programs/kazaa/kazaa.exe
of course i made that up and thats not a valid link, but you will get the idea, just add wine :P

huh? double clicking requires a shortcut, in which i explained shortcuts already so i don't know what exactly your trying to say.

OK. You're right... So all I'd have to do is set the install program in the WINE C: directory and double click its shortcut and it should open just fine?

well like i said, just make the shortcut just like you would for anything else, but just put wine at the beginning of the command line...
