Problems with skype on opensuse 11

I am using Skype on OpenSuse 11 86 x 64 system. I have two problems, but I want to address them one by one.

When making a call to another skype contact all the buttons disappear and only the incoming video can be seen. Buttons such as the call ending button or expanding the video to full screen or my little video box in the corner cannot be seen.

Does anyone else have the same problem or can someone help me rectify this please. Thank you!

Cheers,

I am experiencing the same issue in Ubuntu Hardy.

This started when Skype released a new (for Windows) version recently so it seems a reasonable guess that the issue generates from Skype.

The loss of the outgoing image may be to conserve transmission bandwidth since the number of Skype users is increasing.

I also have a Acer Aspire One A150, which runs on Linux Linpus Lite, which apparently is based on Fedora. Skype does not come with it, but I downloaded the Fedora version of it and it works perfectly. I assume the problem is with Opensuse.

Today, I tested Skype on an Eee PC 1000H, Hardy Heron Netbook Remix and everything worked perfectly.

On my Desktop PC, Hardy Heron 8.04.4, it misbehaves as it does in openSUSE according to your description.
It is possible that a routine system update is responsible.

I will try a removal and re-installation of Skype - watch this space.

Cheers

Removal of "skype" and "skype-common" and subsequent re-installation of skype 2.0.0.72-1 achieved very little.

Both screens (incoming and outgoing) are now present and the buttons to increase image size appear briefly but in the wrong place.

I have not been able to find any reference to this problem on the net.

Hi,

I tried the same with the same results. But when you go full screen the out going video disappears. I checked on the net too, there is no mention of this problem elsewhere. Let me know if you find out anything.

Cheers,

not very helpful, but I have the same issue with skype on my acer travelmate2480. I think it is the skype software itself and all we can do is wait until they (the skype software writers) pick up on it and resolve it for us.

they have a forum for linux:
http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showforum=18

personally it does not bother me enough to do anything about it, I will just wait for the next release and see.

Today I tried an installation of Skype in Ubuntu Jaunty in VirtualBox with partial success leading me to try a "proper" install of Jaunty on a spare partition on one of the hard drives. I then installed Skype and after the usual configuration called myself on another computer. I won't bore you with an account of the conversation that took place but can assure you that Skype worked perfectly, showing both incoming and outgoing video with all the appropriate buttons and controls.

So, where to next? Reinstall v4L or v4L2 ? Scanner works fine. It does look like a corrupted system file is the culprit - but which one?

I would welcome suggestions.

Hi kyphi,

Sorry I did not understand the technical jargon. Are you suggesting it works fine on Ubuntu as opposed to the other Linux variants?

Cheers

Hi yaarappa,

I use Hardy Heron, which is Ubuntu 8.04. I installed Jaunty Jackalope, Ubuntu 9.04 on a vacant section of my hard drive. Skype worked perfectly in Jaunty Jackalope.

This leads me to think that a system file belonging to the operating system in Hardy Heron as well as openSUSE has been corrupted.

Wabbalee also has this problem with Skype but he did not say which particular operating system he is using.

You can query what files Skype (other than the ones it comes with) needs to work - these are called dependencies by typing into a terminal "apt-cache depends skype" (without the quotes). That, yields a list of 10 files for Hardy Heron.

I have re-installed some of these files but have yet to test Skype.

sorry, atm Jaunty, but it did it in Hardy as well and on multiple machines in and around the place. apart from that it works great, at least I can keep in touch by typing messages, speech and video both ways working fine, what else do you need?

No luck yet in tracking down this fault.
What I miss most is the ability to view my partner in conversation in a larger screen size since the button giving me that option has disappeared.
I only have this problem in Hardy and not in Jaunty which is a fresh install.
There are some functions available on mouseover except the selector for screen size.
Back to the hunt.

It is annoying, but I am used to it now. It will be good when skype can come out with a solution.

Before dialing if you stop your video by selecting do not send my video. You would briefly see the buttons. WHen your partner's video begins to appear. Click on the video button if it is still there or where it was the menu still works. You can select fullscreen here. Strange but true. Try it and let me know.

Cheers,

I have noticed that too a while back but didn't think it was worth mentioning, the buttons are missing but the functions are still there; you can click on where the buttons used to be and it seems to work anyway.
