Problems With Shorewall 2.0

Hi all I have installed shorewall 2.0 and setup all the config files with help from the docs on the shorewall site all my lan systems are setup with the server 192.168.0.1 as the gateway, but for some reason I am unable to connect to any websites or ping past the firewall the funny thing is that my bro is able to play on steam with no problems..

Any info would help

Thanks Tim.

What zones have you configured on shorewall, eg. net and lan?

Have you set up port forwarding and enabled it in the kernel?

My configuration is a 2 interface setup with a cable modem, net is set up with eth0 for the internet dchp is enabled on this device since i dont have a static ip. eth1 is setup as loc connected to my network.

As for port forwarding im not sure with that one, iptables is installed and running if that is what you mean by port forwarding.

can someone tell me why steam is able to acces the internet and not anything else.

thanks Tim

Okay thinking about this...

Can you connect to the internet if shorewall is stopped / cleared?
(Check this by suing to root, /etc/init.d/shorewall stop, then typing /sbin/iptables -L if you were not already aware)

If you are able to connect to the internet then it is a shorewall based config problem. In which case ensure as much logging is configured in shorewall and see if packets on known ports like 53(DNS) and 80(HTTP) are being dropped or rejected. It might be that the reason your game works is because it uses ip addresses to contact servers so does not need DNS resolution.

If you still cannot connect without shorewall then you have a network / ppp settings problem.
