I am assuming all of your directories under you'r paths do exist, correct?

Have you added your windows users accounts and passwords to samba and linux?

If your windows accounts are added to Samba and all is well with you'r network, pinging from both sides, then you'r user specefic shares (those in [homes]) should appear in the network neighborhood.

Are you running SElinux?

Even if he failed to add them to his samba user accounts he'd still get prompted for a username and password. The account verification would simply fail.

Can you turn off your firewall on your windows boxes, and/or add the network to your trusted range of IPs?

The issue may have nothing to do with the linux box as far as browsing the shares. It may be that your windows boxes have a firewall that blocks your access to the linux shares. That's not uncommon at all, especially with programs like Norton and McAfee.

Hang10 appears to be your workgroup. The gek04 appears to be the hostname of the workstation you are on.

You need to think gek04 when you access linux box directly. You need to think hang10 when you try to get a list of servers/workstation names that may or may not contain shares.

As previously suggested turn off the firewalls on both computers just to make sure they are not the problem.

I have my firewall and selinux disabled (I am behind a nat firewall so I think it's ok)

When I map a network drive, if I type in
//server/share I can map the drive - but if I click browse the
server does not show up in the browse window.

new view \\servername lists all the shares without error.

In about 7 hours I can compare the samba.conf files right now
I am copying backups from the server because vista backup/restore center
refuses to use it by name and requires a browse...

Oh, and I can see other windows machines on my network.
