Has someone you know crossed over recently? If not, then your problems may be earthly, and possibly having to do with your Linux configuration.
First, you might run "netstat -at" to verify that something is indeed listening on the smtp port. Second, look through the ouput of "ps auxw" for any mail server processes. At least you'll know what's running on your system. But, this won't solve your problem. Was the mail internally generated or externally?
