problems with kernel 2.6.7

im having two kinds of problems with 2.6.7; the first one is that i do make menuconfig, go to device driver support->sound->ALSA->PCI devices->EMU10k1 enable as <M> module, then i build with make, but when i do make modules_install it reports a lot of unresolved symbols on the emu10k1-snd drivers
the other problem is that i dont know what to put in the initrd command
in grub. other kernels have sections like:

title kernel 2.4.some
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.some root=LABEL=/ hdc=ide-scsi
initrd /vmlinuz-2.4.some.img

however various things change relative to 2.6; first the root=LABEL=/ argument will not be accepted anymore, this is solved putting root=/dev/hda1

however i dont know what to put in the initrd for the 2.6 kernel, i could find a vmlinuz-2.6.img file nowhere around

any suggestions?

Do you have module-init-tools-3.0 or better installed. The 2.6.X kernels requires it.

Try not using initrd. Here's the contents of my grub.conf, using 2.6.7, if it helps:

default 0
timeout 10
splashimage=(hd0,6)/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title=Gentoo Linux, kernel 2.6.7
root (hd0,6)
kernel /linux-2.6.7 root=/dev/hda8
