Unhappy Problems with installing GCC

I downloaded GCC-3.3 and now im trying to configure it this is what happens:

[root@luckyclay source]# cd gcc-3.3
[root@luckyclay gcc-3.3]# ./configure
Configuring for a i686-pc-linux-gnuoldld host.
Created "Makefile" in /opt/source/gcc-3.3 using "mt-frag"
./configure: line 8: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.

whats this ./configure: line 8: cc: command not found?
and how do I set the environement variable CC to a working compiler?

Okey, you do realize you need a compiler to compile an compiler. Confused yet? What it come down to is that you must already have an earlier gcc version installed. If you do, then you must set the cc environment variable to where gcc is located at. Find out where gcc is. Usually it is "/usr/bin/gcc". In all probability, it's the same for you. Then do "export cc=/usr/bin/gcc"
If you don't have an compiler yet, you need to get an precompiled version. Look on the cd of you distribution, it should be there. Else, go to there site and download it.
Good luck!

I was looking on their site (gcc.gnu.org) and could not find the precompiled version. maybe I dont know what I'm looking for I'll even settle for an old precompiled version and then compile the new version myself

please advise! thank you!
