Problems with ftp-client

Hi,

I am trying to connect to FTPs via the ftp-command in the commando-prompt. But at many ftp-servers there is a problem. When I do "ls" it doesn't answer until I get an "timeout" and get disconnected.

I asked someone I know (he lives with the guy, who is out for the moment, who runs the ftp-server) but he said that my client needed to be "active" not "passive" but when I asked where I could set that he just answered "I don't know" (he's the kind of guy who gives one answer but no more :P).

Is this the problem (and how do I fix it?) or why can't I do "LS" (I can login and do a cd)?

edit:
I got the passive/active mode to change but it still does not work so that can't be the problem.
(And the guy is just "helping" me by telling me to change client but I would like to get "ftp" to work.)
