Problems with compiling Netatalk

Trying to set it up so our mac users at work can see our linux file shares. Problem is - netatalk wont' compile. here's the output:

afppasswd.o(.text+0xe5): In function `convert_passwd':
/home/downloads/netatalk-1.6.3/bin/afppasswd/afppasswd.c:108: undefined reference to `des_key_sched'
afppasswd.o(.text+0x11d):/home/downloads/netatalk-1.6.3/bin/afppasswd/afppasswd.c:111: undefined reference to `des_ecb_encrypt'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[3]: *** [afppasswd] Error 1

I truly have nfi what's going on here. What am I missing, have I set a flag wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
