Let's just work this out here then, we don't need new problems to figure out just yet right?

You must have some audio files installed...usually you will have some from certain programs such as kde etc...

Try:
locate *.mp3
locate *.wav

The point of this is just to try playing something...so we can see the errors. Once you find an audio file, try playing it as I mentioned above.

Ok, here's what I have:

[root@localhost RFC]# xmms /usr/lib/openoffice/share/gallery/sounds/space.wav

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device

then appears a dialog box in italian (of course) asking me to do some control:

1. correct output plugin selected
2. no other program is blocking my sound card
3. my sound card is properly configured

Anyway I can't figure out why it tries to use OSS....I have chosen NOT TO COMPILE it. neither as a module.....

OK, now we are getting somewhere...maybe.

With xmms open, hit ctrl-p. This should open your preferences dialogue. What does output plugin say? If it is OSS change it to alsa, click apply, and restart xmms. Try the clip again...

If it still says "Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device" then we will address that....

Ok already tried but when I want to chise the output plugin I find only this:
DRIVER OSS 1.2.7 (libOSS.so)

OR

Output plugin eSound1.2.7(libesdout.so)
Both of them give the errors mentioned. No alsa plugin found.

EDIT: well my friend...it's deep night here....02.50 a.m. I gotta go to sleep!

Thanks and thanks again for your help....I hope I can find you here tomorrow
Now I make another post then power me off ;-)

Greetings!!!

Well I just don't know. If xmms doesn't see the plugin I can only assume that alsa is not installed properly.

I suggest following the instructions here:
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc...module=via82xx
to a T.

These instructions are specific to your soundcard.

Go over them, make sure you have all the requirements installed. If you have still no luck then I suggest you reinstall alsa alltogether. Crappy advice I know, but some times updating to the newest version will clear up problems.

Well I have just tried what that page says but installation fails as autoconf finds alsa driver already installed statically in the kernel.
So the only way to get a workaround here is...recompile the kernel WITH nodules-init-tools, with no alsa drivers modules compiled, and to compile them in a second stage.
Thanks anyway
Have a good night (well....me )
