With xmms open, hit ctrl-p. This should open your preferences dialogue. What does output plugin say? If it is OSS change it to alsa, click apply, and restart xmms. Try the clip again...
If it still says "Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): No such device" then we will address that....
These instructions are specific to your soundcard.
Go over them, make sure you have all the requirements installed. If you have still no luck then I suggest you reinstall alsa alltogether. Crappy advice I know, but some times updating to the newest version will clear up problems.
Well I have just tried what that page says but installation fails as autoconf finds alsa driver already installed statically in the kernel.
So the only way to get a workaround here is...recompile the kernel WITH nodules-init-tools, with no alsa drivers modules compiled, and to compile them in a second stage.
