Problems using Real Player
 

I downloaded the RPM of Real Player 8 and installed it using Konsole. As far as I can see it has been installed correctly because I can see it there in the usr/lib/Realplayer8 directory and during the installation, the Real Player graphic installation window opened up after I typed the install command in Konsole.

My problem is how do I actually use the program? I figured that once it has been installed I could just browse to a web page and click on a suitable link and it would open up but this is just not happening.

How do I open the program? There seems to be no icon in the Start Menu of KDE. Would an icon be normally created automatically like with Windows or do I have to some how create it myself? If I do have to create it myself - how do I do this?

first, go to a console and try to launch realplayer to see if it works. based on what you said, it should be:

/usr/lib/RealPlayer8/realplay

(watch out for the correct capitalization, and don't forget that leading slash :) )

if that works, you can add it to your menu -- there's probably some KDE utility for that -- using the same pathname. the icon should be in the same directory as the binary, afaik.

if you get that far, the next step will be getting it to work in your browser. which browser do you usually use?

Thanks for the info, synaptical. I typed in the command line you suggested and Real Player started OK.

I haven't worked out how to create the icon, though:scratch: Any ideas?

The browser I'm using is Mozilla 1.4. Do you know how to get Real Player working with this?

for the icon, look around in the KDE menus for some sort of menu editor. when you find it, adding the icon should be fairly self-explanatory.

for using RP with your browser, try clicking on some RP content on the web (NPR for example -- anything will do). a dialog should come up asking you how to handle the file. enter the path to RP, and check the box that says something about always using that program to handle RP files.

OK, I've got the desktop shortcut sorted - right-clicking the mouse on the desktp opened up a menu which allowed me to do this:)

As for the plug-in hmmmmmm I still can't work this out. When I click on a link for Real Player like on the BBC news site or NPR as you suggested, the Download Manager opens up and downloads - or trys to download - the file (weird thing is that no matter what Real Player link I click-on, it tells me that the download has completed, but the files are always 1KB, and I can't open them???) - No dialogue box opens asking me how to handle the file.

try this: open realplayer, and select "MimeType/Plugin Install" from the Help menu. select all the checkboxes -- there are 3 on mine: Install Netscape plugin, Install Mime Types, and Install mime types for mp3 -- and select next (or maybe finished). mine are already setup, so "next" is grayed out and i don't know where it leads. but go through that dialog and see what happens -- hopefully it will know how to install for mozilla, or maybe there will be a place to enter the path, etc. if that doesn't work, search LQ for how to install the mime types directly into mozilla preferences. it's not hard, i just don't recall the exact file extensions, mime types, etc. gl :)

OK, I tried this and it did not work so I opened up Konsole and opened up RealPlayer as Root and repeated your suggestion. I then closed RealPlayer and opened up Mozilla as Root from Konsole. When I went to the BBC website and clicked on an appropriate link, Real Player opened without problem. When I logged off as Root and tried the same in my non-Root identity, it did not work. have you tried logging out of X and restarting?

When the mozilla download manager opens it should give you the option to "open with" or somesuch. Browse to /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/realplay and then tick the box "allways do this"
Also, the Realplayer has a plugin. Copy /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/rpnp.so into mozilla/plugins

OK, I've sorted the problem. What I did was the following:

1. Click on 'Edit' in the pull-down menu.
2. Click on 'Preferences...'
3. Click on 'Navigator' in the side bar and then on 'Helper Applications'
4. Highlighted 'audio/x-pn-realaudio' and clicked on the 'Edit...' button.
5. A box opened up allowing me to type the path /usr/lib/RealPlayer8/realplay
6. In the same 'Helper Applications box I repeated the same with 'audio/x-pn-realaudio-plugin'.
7. Click the 'OK' button.
8. Open Mozilla and go to a website which has Realplayer links.
9. Click on a link.
10. :D
