problems using efax

I am looking for a decent fax program which will sed/receive faxes and email received faxes to me. I believe that efax-gtk does the job but I am receiving errors in using it

When I receive a fax, I receive the following errors

fax-0.9a: 17:06:52 Warning: bit-reversed HDLC frame, reversing bit order
efax-0.9a: 17:07:23 Error: timed out reading frame data
efax-0.9a: 17:07:26 Warning: timed out after waiting
efax-0.9a: 17:07:26 Error: timed out waiting for command

The config is set up to call send_mail upon receit of a fax but this is either not being executaed or not working as nothig comes through on email

The received fax will print sort of, a standard A4 page is compressed into half a page

When sending faxes, I receivie hte error message 'Incorrect modem response' and then it stops attempting to send the fax

All help appreciated
