nvidia or ATI graphics card?

(at the garbled screen)
  1. hit ALT+CTRL+F1

  2. login as root
  3. type init 3
  4. now type vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf
scroll down and look for this section

Code:
Section "Device"
                                                                                            Identifier "Nvidia"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "unknown"
        BoardName "geforce"
EndSection
or ATI
Code:
Section "Device" Identifier "Nvidia"
Driver "ati"
        VendorName "unknown"
        BoardName "geforce"
EndSection
  1. press i to edit the file and
  2. change it to Driver "vesa"
you dont have to worry about anything else

Code:
Section "Device" Identifier "Nvidia"
    Driver "vesa"
    VendorName "unknown"
    BoardName "unknown"
EndSection

to save it
  1. hit ESC once
  2. hold Shift + hit Z twice
  3. type init 5

it will fix it/ get you into X

but some Video Players might not work

the ultimate fix is to download the proper drivers from ATI nvidia site
and run Mandriva Update
