Problems Setting up Suse 9.1 personal

Hi, ive got a RH9 server and i reciently switched my main box to linux after getting extensivly pissed off with windows (no suprise there!) i first tried suse 9.1 and i was very anoyed as i could not work out how to set it up so it runs gnome instead of KDE and i really dislike KDE because i use gnome on my server and i cnt find anything i want in KDE.

ive got a few questions.
1) would i be better using suse than fedora 2 ?
2) how do you setup suse so that it only uses gnome now KDE ?

Ben

I'm pretty sure that by default Suse doesn't install Gnome. You can install it using Yast and then log in with it.

In YaST under the Software tab is an option to "Install and Remove Software" click on that. When the Install window opens change the filter to "Selections" there is an option for the GNOME system check the tag next to it, put your install disk into your computer and let it go. After it gets done installing log out of KDE, put in your username and password than click on the "menu" and go to "Session Type" change it to GNOME and click on "Login" Gnome should start up and the KDE login manager will remember your last login settings so next time you go to login you should just have to put in you user name and password and click "Login" to get back into GNOME.

Hope this helps you out

i reinstalled suse 9.1 personal last night and while it is installing it shows you features of it (same as windows etc.) i noticed sumthing! i cant actually remember what it said exactly but i think it said that you can only install gnome if you have 9.1 pro, is this right because i followed what you said and i could not find a Gnome system check box in the "selections" filter.

Looking at SuSE's website it would appear that the personal version only ships with KDE, it looks like to use GNOME you need the pro version or you need to install GNOME yourself, Id recommend going here and using Ximian (built on GNOME), the installer works perfectly with SuSE, you will need "wget," which SuSE's website shows is included in the personal version, and a broadband Internet connection to install it but it will be a lot easier than installing individual packages for the entire GNOME desktop. The install takes about a half an hour on a cable Internet connection if I remember correctly.
