Oh, sorry.
Short version of it was whenever I tried to run Eclipse I got the error message saying JDK is needed, VM canot be found.
After I installed the java 2 sdk environment it was producing the same error.
What I had to do was edit /etc/profile and add
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/j2sdk1.4.2_04/bin
then source /etc/profile
/opt... was where j2sdk was installed.
That fixed it.
