problems playing dvds in mplayer

I am trying to play dvds in mplayer however I seem to be having some problems.

when I type the following at the command line:

$mplayer -dvd 1

these are the last few lines of the message i get back

$playing dvd title 1
$libdvdread: couldn't find device name
$reading disc structure
$please wait...
$libdvdread: can't open file VIDEO_TS.IFO
$can't open VMG info!
$exiting (end of file)

I'm sure i have played dvds before using mplayer, i just dont remember what i did differently

can anyone please help???
thanx
M.

do you have /dev/dvd? if not, try making a link called /dev/dvd that points to your dvd device label (alias, link, whatever).

ie. if your dvd device is using the link /dev/cdrom1, use this command while su'ed as root in a shell terminal:

ln -s /dev/cdrom1 /dev/dvd

from what i remember about mplayer, by default it's set to look for /dev/dvd as the device player.

2 things i can think of.

first, are you sure your dvd player is using the device link, /dev/cdrom?

and second, you may need to get your hands on libdvdcss as you could be trying to play an dvd using css.

edit: a third thing... are you sure you have all the dependancies needed by mplayer?

A quick look inside /etc/fstab should tell you what your cdrom is.

For example I have a DVD-ROM and an IDE-Burner and they got mounted (from the install) as cdrom and cdrom2, but I didn't know which was which...a quick peek showed me.

(BTW, my CD/DVD-Rom is using /dev/hdc, might be the same for you).
