Problems on startup with xserver failed

I am using Red Hat linux 9 and worked fine before but...

When I start the linux today, it said that the xserver setting may be wrong so that the graphical mode of linux can't be started.

Then it show the text mode for login. Also the display blink for a moment and then the login page appeared again and the above process repeated.

When I check the service, the service local seems to be failed.

I am quite a newbie:newbie: for linux and I try my best to explain my situation and hope someone can help.

This is the last few lines from var/log/XFree86.0.log

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

I'm using debian which has another xserver version as RedHat as far as I know. But maybe this is still helpful for you.

In debian the font paths and so on are defined in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Search the "Files" section in which there should be some FontPath elements defined. Maybe you have accidently deleted a folder containing the font definitions? Or alternatively only the read/ write permissions have been altered?

However I somewhat doubt that this font problem is really the cause for the xserver startup failure. I remember having had a similar font problem and x was still working smoothly. Could you post your complete x log file ?

Ok, according to the los your xserver crashes after this font error. So you should really check your font paths in the x config file.

However, your xserver obviously has problems recognizing your monitor:

Do you really have a monochrome display manuafactured in 1990 :D ?
I am not an xserver expert but I would recommend to check your monitor definition in /etc/X11/xorg.conf (or whatever this file is named in RedHat). Try to specify the correct hsync and vrefresh values (consult your monitor documentation), maybe even a specific ModeLine definition.
