Problems installing Electric Sheep

I am trying to install the electric sheep screensaver on my computer. When I run ./configure I get the following error upon exit:

Code:
checking for png_write_image in -lpng... no
configure: error: The png library is required.
configure: error: /bin/sh './configure' failed for flame
I've run ./configure with the following permutations:
./configure
./configure --with-libpng=/usr/lib
./configure --prefix=/usr
./configure --prefix=/usr/lib

I've also read this post with no avail:

I had the same problem. Follw this guys thread here http://draves.org/HyperNews/get.cgi/flame/496.html

its a pain in the butt to do, but it'll work
